Sunscreen is vital to protecting our skin from the harsh sun, especially for small children. However, not all sunscreens are created equal, and finding the one that's right for you can be a challenging task. Luckily, we've done the legwork and are here to share our top recommendations, along with some key things to remember when choosing your sunscreen.
Things to Remember When Choosing Sunscreen
When selecting a sunscreen, look for one that offers at least SPF 15, ideally 30+. It should contain reef-safe ingredients, as traditional sunscreens can contain chemicals that harm marine life. For small children, opt for a mineral sunscreen, which sits on top of the skin and provides a physical barrier against the sun. Try to avoid aerosol cans where possible, as they can be harmful to lungs.
Moreover, reef-safe sunscreen, which is free of harmful substances such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, parabens, nano particles, and microplastics, has become more commonplace and is a preferable choice.
Our Top Sunscreen Recommendations
Best Spray-On: Babyganics
Babyganics is a mineral-only brand safe for little ones. It comes in a non-aerosol bottle, which is a big plus. While mineral sunscreens don't rub in well and can leave a white cast, this can be useful to know when to reapply on small children.
Best Gel: Bullfrog Quick Gel
Bullfrog Quick Gel is an oil-free sunscreen that comes highly recommended by dermatologists. The gel is clear and isn't rubbed in - instead, you spread a layer on your skin and allow it to dry. It doesn’t leave behind a white cast; however, remember to apply it 30 minutes before sun exposure for proper drying.
Best Invisible: Supergoop!
Supergoop! is an oil-free, clear sunscreen that's suitable for all skin tones. It's great for those with sensory challenges as it is odorless and lightweight. Plus, it doesn't leave behind an oily residue. The only drawback is the cost, but it also comes in a tinted version with 14 shades.
Best Roll-on Stick: Hello Bello Face + Body Sun Stick
While my children won't tolerate a roll-on, this form is great for adults too! It's easy to roll out and safe for the whole family. The protection is quite good, and sticks are also easier for carry-on travelers as they do not count towards the liquid allotment.
Best Travel Size: Neutrogena Sheer Zinc
For a travel size tube, we like Neutrogena Sheer Zinc mineral sunscreen. It's lightweight and doesn't feel greasy. While it isn't completely clear, the white cast is less noticeable than many other mineral-based sunscreens. Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer also comes in travel tubes but isn't reef safe as it contains oxybenzone.
Best Budget for Body: Coppertone Pure & Simple
Coppertone Pure & Simple comes in Kids, Baby, and Face formulas, making it safe for the whole family. It's also reef safe. Unfortunately, the spray is only available as an aerosol, and it does leave a white cast.
Best Budget for Face: Trader Joe’s Facial Sunscreen
Trader Joe’s has introduced a facial sunscreen that is a credible dupe to SuperGoop’s unseen sunscreen. It has very similar ingredients, but at half the cost. It's also conveniently travel-sized, perfect for a dopp kit or in the glove box.
Along with sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, and UPF clothing all play a part in protecting us from the sun. It's also advisable to avoid the strongest sun at midday. So, what is your go-to or most tolerated sunscreen? We'd love to hear from you in the comments!
